No Sale of Mil-Surplus Jerry Cans After 1/1/2009
I just read that due to a new federal law, NO mil-surplus jerry cans will be sold in the US starting 1/1/2009. I first read this on survivalblog.com, Googled the topic, then saw:
http://www.expeditionportal.com/foru...d.php?p=311331 Jerry cans - New Law -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I assume that everyone knows that there is a new US federal regulation going into effect at the end of 2008 regarding new fuel cans sold in the United States. All fuel cans sold new within the United States must have child proof openings. NATO style jerry cans and jeep cans do not comply as being child proof. What this means is that companies who sell these cans in the US will be in violation of the regulation and subject to penalties and that these cans will disappear from the US market. If you don't have a life time supply of jerry cans it would be a good idea to stock up soon Doesn't this make you feel safer? Do it for the children! I went to my local Meijer last week & got a couple more Blitz kerosene cans (blue plastic). These had their "state of the art" Enviro-Flo valves (for the children) with flexible nozzle attachments. I took the valve assembly off the handle, made sure it could screw onto the threaded opening, and then took the cans to the Meijer kerosene pump. RIGHT before I started to fill the first can, I heard something rattling inside it. Blitz USA dumps the flexible nozzle attachment inside the can. After several minutes of shaking the can upside down, trying to turn it different ways, fishing with my finger inside the can opening, I finally said "to hell with it". I returned the cans a few minutes later. Irritation! I'd much rather use some old steel jerrycans. |

can only hope you were wearing your seatbelt and had your helmet on while performing this hazardous procedure.

Wally-World (WW) cans are made by Blitz (see my rant about their idiocy at the top of this thread), and that's enough of a strike against them for me. The WW cans have new, kinder gentler "for the children" childproof nozzles made of multiple tiny ittsy bittsy pieces of delicate plastic & rubber. They DO NOT come with a separate normal screw-on cap, just the delicate nozzle sticking out from the can. This could easily become snagged on something & break off, making a mess (and a possible environmental "tragedy"). Plastic becomes brittle at low temperatures. While the makers probably add a small amount of UV stabilizer & antioxidants to the plastic compound, the high density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic used in commercial gas cans also becomes brittle after long term exposure to UV (sunlight). HDPE & LDPE containers are POOR barriers against oxygen penetration. As oxygen penetrates into the plastic can, it reacts forming oxidized gummy fuel. Other than being fragile and useless for long term fuel storage, those Blitz cans sure are nice & cheap.:sarc: For long term storage (over 6 months), metal cans are definitely preferred. I'm not sure, but CARB compliant, child-safe jerrycans may be available through WEDCO, but at a high cost ($40 a pop). I much preferred the $10-$15 mil-surplus jerrycans. |

They still make safety gas cans the old way.

A few months ago I found 6 of the old Jerrys at my local flea market I paid $5 or so for them.
Anybody know a good source for the flexible aluminum pouring spouts? My local Army Surplus store wants $16.50 a piece, too much IMHO. |
